  • (NEW ITEM) Tomorrow - May 7. 6 PM. City Council/BOE Budget Meeting. The City Council is mandated by law to review and/or propose changes to the BOE budget, which was defeated in a public referendum April 20. Deadline for formal Council action is May 19. At Emerson Community School, East 3rd Street and Emerson Avenue. Public welcome.

  • Tomorrow - May 7. 9 AM - 4 PM. Book Repair Workshop. Learn simple and intermediate methods to repair, restore, bind and protect books with archival materials. This is the first of three workshops (the others are May 27 and June 25). Bring a problem book for a diagnosis and demonstration on how to repair it. $30/session, includes lunch.   • Saturday - May 8. 9 AM - 1 PM. Annual Spring Fishing Derby. The Rec Division's annual derby, with a prize for biggest fish caught. The pond will be stocked with Channel Catfish and Small Mouth Bass. Pack a snack, bring your own fishing pole. At Green Brook Park. (Rain date, May 15th.) -- Note: If you lived in Warren, you would be able to read about your fishing derby in the papers (see here).

  • Saturday - May 8. 10 AM 'til done. Library Park Community Cleanup. Responding to Maria Pellum's dramatic post showing graffiti and vandalism at Library Park, activist Rebecca Williams and others have organized a cleanup. Rakes, gloves and trash bag will be supplied by the Division of Public Works. Gather at the fountain.

  • (NEW ITEM) Saturday - May 8. 11 AM - 12:30 PM. Cinqo de Mayo Celebration. The student government of Union County College's Plainfield campus hosts a celebration for the community, featuring an Ecuadorian dance troupe and traditional foods. In the parking lot of UCC-Plainfield, Church Street (between East 2nd and East 3rd Streets). All are welcome.

  • (NEW ITEM) Saturday - May 8. 3 - 7 PM. Mother's Day Bazaar. Last minute shopping opportunity for Mother's Day, arranged by PHS Class of 1970 members. Jewelry, Avon products, floral arrangements and more. At Mohawk Lodge #307, 1357 West Third Street (lower level). FREE admission.

  • Monday - May 10. 8 PM. City Council Business Meeting. City Council Chambers/Courthouse. Watchung Avenue and East 4th Street. Public may speak at beginning and end of meeting.

  • Saturday - May 15. 7 PM. (Doors open at 6:15 PM). Reception & Auction to Benefit Camp Discovery. One of Plainfield's most popular fundraisers, featuring sports tickets, gift certificates, jewelry, art, collectibles, dinners, services and more. Reception includes wine, cheeses and light desserts. Camp Discovery is a summer day camp offering a safe, healthy and exciting camp experience for at-risk Plainfield youngsters. Tickets: $10/person.   • Sunday - May 16. 3 PM. Concert: Duo Pianists Edwin Lopez & Ronald Thayer. Lopez and Thayer present an afternoon of classical music and show tunes, from Bach and Clementi to Gershwin and Berlin.
