  • [MLK Event] Friday - January 14. 7 - 9 PM. NAACP: Engaging Today's Civil Rights Issues. Join members of the Plainfield Chapter of the NAACP and community residents in a discussion of two of today's important issues: 7-8 PM will focus on New Jersey's legislative redistricting in 2011; and 8-9 PM will take up community needs and the social service providers of Plainfield.   • [MLK Event] Saturday - January 15. Doors open 12:30 PM. Omega Psi Phi: 'The Dream: It's Up To Me'. Omega Psi Phi's Omicron Chi chapter presents the 'Omega Talent Hunt', showcasing the area's most talented student performers in Dance, Instrumental and Spoken Word/Drama. POP: Celebrating the Life  and Work of Martin Luther King Jr. The Plainfield chapter of the People's Organization for Progress holds its annual program, featuring Larry Hamm as guest speaker.   • [MLK Event] Monday - January 17. 8:30 AM. Frontiers Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Memorial Breakfast. The Plainfield Area Club of Frontiers International hosts this most popular annual event. This year's guest speaker is Dr. Joy DeGruy, author of 'Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome'. At Plainfield High School Cafeteria, 950 Park Avenue (use Kenyon Avenue lot and entrance). Join Plainfield education professionals Barbara Gadegbeku, PhD, and Willa Cofield, EdD, in a discussion of the Civil Rights era, including eyewitness accounts of Civil Rights marches. Share your thoughts about Dr. King's Dream in the America of 2011. At Grace Episcopal Church., East 7th Street and Cleveland Avenue (use parish hall entrance at Cleveland Avenue and East 6th Street).

  • [MLK Event] Monday - January 17. 4 PM. Shiloh Baptist Church: City-Wide Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration. Shiloh's pastor, the Rev. Dr. Gerald Lamont Thomas hosts this annual service for the community, this year featuring keynote speaker the Rev. Samuel 'Billy' Kyles, pastor of Monumental Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee, and the last person to see Dr. King alive. The Freedom Youth Choir will make a guest appearance, singing songs of the Civil Rights movement. At Shiloh Baptist Church, 515 West Fourth Street.

  • Tuesday - January 18. 7 PM. FOSH Board Meeting. The monthly meeting of this community organization plans its year-round activities. Mark your calendars for the annual Garage Sale on Saturday/Sunday, May 21/22 and the Maidens in May House Tour on May 22.
